What is the "Standard White Door"?
The “Standard White Door” is the most common garage door you see in your neighborhood. Most buyers start with the "Standard White Door" and then discover unique designer options available with different insulation values, panel and window configurations, and hardware accessories. Read our Buying Guide for more information.
How large should the opening for a garage door be?
Aim to create an opening that's ¼" smaller than the door. This is known as a jamb lap. It helps seal the door better than using an opening the same size as the door and covers a small portion of the door face . Once the weather stops are installed, it will also help keep the elements out.
Do I need the floor in place to install the door(s)?
NationServe's policy requires property owners to have a floor in place to install a new door.
How much room do I need above the opening to make everything work correctly? Standard commercial: 20"
Standard residential: 12"
Can the door be painted?
Not all doors can be repainted but you can choose from a variety of colors before buying
How important is insulation in a garage door?
In addition to helping control the temperature of your garage, insulation also strengthens your door and helps reduce noise.
What does R-Value mean? (e.g., R-11, R-16, etc.)
R-Value lets you know the insulation value of your garage door. If you have an insulated garage, having a low R-Value garage door would let more heat out in colder months. An insulated door helps keep your garage cooler in the summer months and warmer during the winter.
NationServe recommends a minimum R-11 door for insulated or heated garages. However, if you spend a lot of time in your garage, or there is a bedroom or other room above it, we recommend doors rated R-14 or R-16.
