Five Tips for Preparing Your Garage Door for Winter

With winter fast approaching, performing a few preventative maintenance tasks can help keep your garage door running smoothly all season long.

Winter garage door maintenance

1. Lubricate All Metal Moving Parts

Cold weather and moisture can cause your garage door’s rollers, tracks, springs, and hinges to stick and can prevent your garage door from opening and closing with ease. Using an oil-based lubricant, evenly coat all of your door’s metal moving parts and be sure to wipe away excess lubricant to keep it from dripping onto the floor.

2. Fix or Replace Weather Stripping

As the temperature drops and snow starts to fall, maintaining your garage door’s weather stripping is more important than ever. Weather stripping acts as a seal between your garage door and its opening, preventing moisture and cold air from seeping inside. As an added bonus, it also helps to prevent mold from developing.

Inspect the weather stripping around the frame and bottom of your garage door and, if it appears loose, brittle or cracked, contact our team to have it repaired or replaced.

3. Check Your External Keypad

With winter comes extreme weather conditions that can wreak havoc on your external keypad and drain its battery more quickly. Don’t get stuck out in the cold— replace your keypad’s battery in advance to keep it running strong.

If your keypad is looking worse for wear, it may be time for an upgrade. Explore our selection of Genie garage door openers and accessories to find the right fit for your door.

4. Organize Your Garage

After a heavy snowfall, your garage door may become stuck or difficult to open due to a buildup of ice and snow.  Make sure you have easy access to your winter tools, such as your shovel, ice melt and snow blower, by storing them front and centre in your garage. Consider installing hooks and shelving in your garage near the entry to your home so you don’t have to go searching.
